EUROPE - BRAZIL COLLABORATION OF BIG DATA SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH THROUGH CLOUD-CENTRIC APPLICATIONS

Self elasticity, interoperability and automated deployment of cloud services for research: EUBra-BIGSEA presentation at the Digital Infrastructures for Research 2016 Conference,  28-30 September 2016, Krakow, Poland

The Digital Infrastructure for Research (DI4R), the first joint event organised by the major European e-Infrastructure initiative EGIEUDATGÉANTOpenAIRE and RDA took place in Krakow, Poland, from 28th to 30th September 2016, hosted by ACC Cyfronet AGH, Kraków's Academic Computing Centre.

The event, built around the theme of “Serving the User base”, was focused on ensuring the end users play a key role in the design and development of the services provided by the major European research  infrastructures. The conference offered three full days of brainstorming and discussions between researchers and infrastructure providers spanning across 4 main key topics organised in workshops, training and plenary sessions:

      Challenges facing users and service providers. 

      Services enabling research.

      A changing environment, changing research.

      Working with data.       

 

EUBra-BIGSEA contributed to the track "Working with data", in the "Data processing approaches" session.

Ignacio Blanquer, the EU project coordinator, gave an overview of one of the EUBra-BIGSEA missions aimed  to define and implement a cloud based architecture and services with QoS guarantees for Big Data Analytics.

The talk and discussions focused on a set of pivotal concepts addressed by the project around resource allocation, QoS, and Big Data services for capturing, federating, and annotating large volumes of data.

The discussions involved both infrastructure providers, dealing with frameworks that manage multiple types of data analytic workloads and particularly looking into the automatic scale-up capabilities, as well as data scientists, running their applications in different virtual research environments and interested in highly scalable systems.
