The EU-Brazil Information Society Dialogue back in November 2015 concluded that Europe & Brazil should further engage on a dialogue on cloud computing that addresses cloud policy, personal data protection, transatlantic flows of data, portability of data, interoperability and remedies to avoid vendor lock-in.
EUBra-BIGSEA: Europe – Brazil Collaboration of BIG Data Scientific Research through Cloud-Centric Applications aims to do exactly that in its provisioning of a cloud framework for the development of distributed Big Data applications focusing particularly on the context of the massively connected societies and on improving citizen mobility.

The project moves for an innovative approach as effort will be placed on defining efficient mechanisms to ensure data protection, privacy and security of the applications on top of a Quality of Service - aware infrastructure capable of provisioning resources rapidly and efficiently in a cloud-based environment. All this will be possible thanks to its multi-disciplinary knowledge base consolidated on the expertise of its 11 European and Brazilian partners: universities, private R&D enterprise, supercomputing & research centres.
Focus on smart mobility
EUBra-BIGSEA focuses on Massively Connected Societies: a real user scenario with high social and business impact, and of high interest for both Europe and Brazil and characterised by heterogeneous data generated from multiple sources. Stationary data on public transportation routes or terminals will be combined with real time data provided by different categories of sensors (e.g., environmental data such as the weather forecast, air quality and social media data like twitter feeds on mobility or reviews and feedback from users).
"Our proof of concept is focused on smart cities. How would we in the context of a smart city manage with privacy, security, quality of service while dealing with large volumes of data ? […] We ought to count on mechanisms that anticipate problems while all data being stored and handled in the cloud." explains Wagner Meira, UFMG and Brazilian Project Coordinator.
EU Project Coordinator and researcher at I3M, Polytechnic University of Valencia, Ignacio Blanquer, details: “The main challenge faced by the project is to get all of the information resources hosted in the cloud to [work together and] automatically adapt to the needs of the user […] We aim to offer a consistently high quality data processing service that will be the basis on which information is sent out to users in real-time”.
Launching this endeavour is particularly important as it builds on a strong international cooperation legacy leveraging the experience gained on consolidated, past international projects in the area of Cloud Computing and Big Data services such as EUBrazilCloudConnect or EUBrazilOpenBio.

EUBra-BIGSEA has been financed by the European Commission under the H2020 Programme and the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology.
EUBra-BIGSEA officially kicked off on 1st January 2016 and the first face-to-face meeting was held in Valencia (Spain) on 22nd – 24th February.
The EUBra-BIGSEA consortium is jointly coordinated by Universitat Politècnica de València (ES) and Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (BR).
